8 y.o. Emma Thompson Crushes 500 Freestyle Record

The Spokane Waves Aquatic Team hosted the “Last Minute Mile” swim meet Saturday afternoon at Whitworth University in Spokane, Washington. Four events were held starting with mixed open 400 IM followed by mixed open 500 Free, 1000 Free and 1650 Free. According to 8 year old Emma Thompson’s mother, Jessi, Emma had never swum 500 continuous yards before without stopping. The record for an 8 year old before today was just under 8 minutes.

Emma dove off the blocks with a full head of steam and swam her first 50 yards in 40 seconds. She would finish her first 100 in 1:25. She quickly settled into a rhythm over the next three hundred holding steady at 1:32. Her final 100 was a full 5 seconds faster. Emma utilized a strong kick to finish her last 100 in 1:26. Training Hours

It’s hard to believe Ironman 70.3 California is less than 2 months away.  This year it’s on Saturday, March 31st. This will be my first big race of the 2012 season.  In the left hand column of my website you can see my full race schedule.   While Oceanside will be my first triathlon of the year, I will be doing a short duathlon in Lewiston, Idaho one week earlier.  This will be by far my biggest racing season ever.  I’ve added three XTERRA races too.  I figured since I’m turning 40 this year, I might as well go big or go home!

My training is off to a good start this season.  One of the things I’ve leaned over the years is the importance of building a foundation in the off-season and that’s what I’ve been trying to do.  My last triathlon related assignment ended on November 20th with Ironman Arizona in Tempe.  The day after I got home I started training.  Some people like to keep their training hours secret but who really cares, right?!   Here’s my breakdown so far this year.  I think I’m on the right track. Alright, Alright, Alright

Entertainment Weekly:  You know what we love about Dazed and Confused? Matthew McConaughey gets older, but David Wooderson stays the same age.

After a nearly twenty-year hiatus, McConaughey has reprised the stoner comedy’s lingering high school graduate in Butch Walker’s new video for “Synthesizers,” off his album The Spade.

The collaboration came out of mutual admiration, and probably a dash of nostalgia. ”When it comes to classic characters, Matthew McConaughey’s ‘Wooderson’ took the cake…and the high school girls with him,” Walker says.

Added McConaughey, “If you love Dazed and you loved Wooderson, you’ll see this and you’ll probably get the tickle box pretty quick.” Read more »

One Hundred One Hundreds

My longest ever swim workout before January 1, 2012 consisted of maybe 5,500 yards in one session.  The thought of doing anything more than that never really seemed like much fun (it’s not).  As new year’s day 2012 approached I began to notice people posting on Facebook their first workout of the year plans.  A few years ago I remember seeing someone post their new year’s day swim workout of 100 100 yard sets.   Yep, that’s 10,000 yards.   For some crazy reason I thought that might be a good challenge at this point in my life and triathlon career.

I didn’t really advertise my plans just in case I chickened out.   Honesty, I wasn’t sure if I wanted to spend that much time in the pool after calculating how long it might take.  I estimated a time of 3 to 3.5 hours based on previous 1,000 yard times.

When Sunday January first rolled around, Muffin (Melissa) and I went to Oz Fitness in North Spokane so I could give it a shot.  She joined me in the pool for the first 30-45 minutes then went grocery shopping.  Read more »
